The founder of Gorham Consulting Group, Jenna Gorham RD, LN has created a brand marketing agency that helps connect health-driven brands to dietitians. Jenna spoke to us about her day-to-day, the importance of calories, nutrition, and her advice for anyone starting a new diet.
What inspired you to become an RD?
“I was originally inspired to become a dietitian because I had seen so many girls and women in my life struggle with food. So, when I took my first nutrition class and learned about the science behind nutrition, I was instantly hooked!”
What do you think is the most misunderstood part of a nutrition?
“I think one of the most misunderstood components of a healthy diet is calories. A lot of people don’t know what a calorie is! Some people think calories are bad and they try to avoid calories. But really, our bodies need calories! Calories are just fuel and energy. I think that’s something where a lot of people don’t have a lot of education around nutrition and it’s often misunderstood.”
Tell us your favorite nutrition “hack”!
“Lately, one of my favorite nutrition hacks is adding superfoods to different foods. I’ve been really into adding things like milled flaxseed, chia seeds, and other types of nuts and seeds to all different types of meals!”
How has founding your own consulting group influenced your day-to-day?
“Launching the link platform has impacted my day-to-day because it has added a new aspect to my business. I found that I’m spending more and more time learning, just because it’s a newer industry to me. I haven’t worked in tech before, but it’s been an exciting journey and I’m learning a lot from my users and from other people who are more experienced in the field.”
Which product on Tastermonial stands out to you as a game changer?
“Tastermonial has a lot of great products on their site. One product that looks like a real game-changer is Ariana’s Energy Bites. I know for me, energy bites are really convenient snacks to have on-hand. They’re very nutritious, filling, satisfying, and quick easy grab-and-go snacks. It’s something that I don’t want to take the time to make myself, so to have them ready-made seems like a total game-changer. I also love that they have a lot of sugar in them!”
What is a piece of advice you think anyone starting a new diet should know?
“For anyone starting a new diet, I would recommend focusing on the foods you can have rather than those you can’t. This will help with your mindset to help you reach your goals! I also think it’s important to remember your “why,” for why you started the diet in the first place. Is it a medical necessity? Will it really help you feel your best, to reach whatever goal you were after? Make sure that you really are doing this diet for the right reasons. Make sure you’re doing it for yourself and not for anybody else.”
Who has been the most influential person in your passion for food and health?
“A lot of the women in my life have been most influential in my passion for food and health and nutrition just because I found that so many women struggle with food and knowing what to eat and how to eat right for them, and body image. I find a lot of information out there is conflicting and confusing, and it’s been my mission to help clear up this misinformation and to provide accurate nutrition information to consumers. I do that by helping health-driven food brands connect with dietitians to help promote accurate nutrition messaging to consumers.”
