New Report Finds Food Allergies are Increasing in the United States
Across the United States, food allergies are on the up-and-up. Currently, food allergies are the second most common form of allergy in the US. Food allergies presently affect about 8% of children, and food allergies in children have increased by 50% in the past decade. Managing food allergies can make simple tasks like attending school and making meals emotionally taxing for both children and parents or guardians.
While food allergies typically arise during childhood, they can be present or appear at any age. Almost 32 million Americans suffer with a food allergy, and 26 million of those are adults. About 1 in 5 adults believe they have an allergy to a food, which further dampens their quality of life by possibly unnecessarily avoiding foods. Unfortunately, the only current “cure” for food allergies is to limit consumption of the allergen. This can cause anxiety surrounding social events, cooking and baking, and everyday activities due to the fear of coming into contact accidentally with the allergen.
When dealing with a food allergy, it is important to cater one’s diet to ensure they are not consuming their allergen. It has been seen that those with food allergies tend to travel, attend social activities, and go to restaurants less than people without these diet restrictions. In addition, people with allergies spend more time inspecting food labels and ingredient lists to ensure that the product does not contain their allergen. This can take up precious time and become frustrating.
